Designed by Dr Bob King, Consultant cardio thoracic and ITU anaesthetist at the Northern General Hospital and Geoff Laming, cardio thoracic pump technician, for attachment to the "workhorse" Cape Ventilators, used on ITU. It was based on the Starr-Edwards artificial heart valve, then in common use, and used a ball bearing and nylon seat arrangement. Manufactured commercially in 1973, and in use for the remaining life of the Cape ventilators. It was also used in a CPAP circuit devised by Dr King.
