Welcome to the Sheffield School of Anaesthesia

The Sheffield and South Yorkshire School is one of the most geographically compact in the country with all hospitals being within easy commute of the Sheffield base.

The programme prides itself on its friendly and personalised approach to training. Unlike some programmes there is no “one size fits all” approach. We make great efforts to consider trainees needs on an individual basis and accommodate them wherever possible.

The South Yorkshire School incorporates the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (located in Sheffield) and 4 district hospitals. The central hospitals provide specialty training with the district general hospitals providing a combination of general and specialty training. There is a dedicated childrens' hospital that trainees rotate through at an early stage to gain paediatric skills. The rotation is traditionally very popular. Successful trainees will be appointed to a 2 year basic level training programme with a minimum of 21 months spent in anaesthesia and 3 months spent in Intensive Care Medicine. After this (assuming satisfactory progress) the Basic Level Training Certificate will be awarded.

Why train with us?

Although we are rightly proud of our exam pass rate, we also pride ourselves on providing an enthusiastic, friendly and supportive environment in which to learn the specialty. We are proud of our FRCA examination programme and like to believe that it’s one of the best in the country. This is no idle boast.

At the recent Royal College School Visit we were praised for the commitment and enthusiasm of the anaesthetic trainers in all of the hospitals, both central and DGH. We have an excellent first time pass rates for the Primary FRCA examination. We have a dedicated Primary FRCA course including lectures and SOE practice run by our trainers throughout the region. We have a dedicated Novice Anaesthetist course for new anaesthetists with specialist guest lecturers from throughout the region. This accelerates the acquisition of skills and techniques, helping you understand not just how to perform skills/procedures but more importantly when to do them and why! All trainees are assigned a specially trained educational supervisor to help them progress and achieve their training needs. Our reputation for help and support is second to none. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile for our trainees, whether helping them through difficulties or encouraging them to excel.
